"Mind's Eye" MindArt Project

Full view of Mind's Eye

In 2005, the School of Psychology commissioned Peter Randall-Page to produce an enduring and accessible work of public art "Mind's Eye" which is located near the entrance to the School. This artwork is now completed and the formal launch is scheduled for early Spring.

The MindArt project was conceived as a method of capturing the dynamic interplay between science and art, particularly where this relates to characterizing the mental structure of the human mind. The remit was to create a significant artwork that celebrates how visual arts can interpret the broad theme of psychology and also reflect the School’s pre-eminent international status as a centre of research excellence. A key aim was to promote a greater understanding of psychology and its application (in its many forms) by engaging the wider public in the process and content of what is essentially the science of mental states.

While Cardiff University has a relatively modest record of commissioning public works of art – the most notable exception being Barbara Hepworth’s sculpture on Colum Road – the University regards the MindArt commission as a significant method of improving its estate, increasing the attractiveness of the University to students and staff, while enhancing the local amenity for residents and visitors to Cardiff. The proposed artwork will become a major landmark on one of the main routes into the City Centre. It will bring a strong sense of identity to the School and add to the University’s existing collection of public art.
